Influence of Surface Nanocrystallization on Two-Step Pack-Boronizing of AISI 5120 Steel

AISI 5120 steel, which underwent 30 min single-surface nanocrystallization via supersonic fine particle bombarding (SFPB), was pre-boronized at 600 °C for 2 h, and then final-boronized 800 or 900 2–6 i.e., two-step pack-boronizing. The specimens’ microstructure mechanical characteristics before after boronizing were examined in detail. results showed that the hardness of SFPB surface reached 570 HV, 2.73 times higher than its original (209 HV). nanocrystallized exhibited increased thickness boride layer, comparison to un-SFPB surface. Two-step pack-boronizing further improved steel. When final-boronizing 6 layer 88 µm 2196 respectively, 10.5 hardness. Additionally, CeO2 added agent helpful obtaining with ductile-serrated Fe2B phase rather brittle FeB expected industrial applications.
